Careers in the Law Industry

Recently graduated? Confused about your options? Not working? No ideas? The New Zealand Law Students’ Association (NZLSA) would like to help you explore all possible avenues. The NZLSA is an elected body responsible for the interests of law students- both present and those newly graduated.

In conjunction with the regional career offices, NZLSA has collected a range of information which can help you make decisions on your future career and provide assistance in preparing for that all important job interview. The information on this site is indicative only of the wide range of information that is available at your local career offices, so if you can’t find something here, then visit your local careers office at the addresses below.

Not sure where to start? The 2005 Employment Destinations of New Zealand University Law Graduates gives you an excellent idea of where people have gone with their law degree. Check it out here.

The Career View produced by Victoria University provides useful information about the main roles and areas in which graduates work and provides graduate profiles on recent law graduates. Check it out here.

If you are still unsure as to a possible start for your career, check out editions of LEX this year. LEX is the official magazine of the NZLSA and is intended to inform, educate and humour all present law students and recent law graduates. Make sure you pick up a copy at your law school or download the online version from this website.

More specific tip sheets and advice can be accessed from the drop down menus above. Information includes C.V preparation, Cover letters, Common Interview Questions and Networking skills. Don’t forget to check out jobs on the student job search website which also can be accessed from the menus on the left.

Finally a new initiative; The NZUniCareerhub is a consortium of seven New Zealand Universities who co-operate in the area of graduate recruitment. The service is offered by staff who know university graduates and understand graduate recruitment. It is a one stop shop for student’s graduates and employers. Check it out here at www.nzunicareerhub.ac.nz.
